The only thing better than getting a massage may be getting a massage with cannabis-infused oil.
Whether you’re looking to make your massage therapy the best it can be, or you want to uplevel a casual massage for yourself or a partner, homemade cannabis-infused massage oil is the best way to do it.
Here, we’ll discuss what cannabis-infused massage oil is, its benefits, and how to make it.
What is Cannabis-Infused Massage Oil?
A massage is meant to help you relax, relieve sore or tight muscles, and release tension. Because cannabis can have these same effects, adding a cannabis-infused massage oil to your routine can take your massage to the next level.
Some studies have found that CBD can help reduce pain or soreness, and this makes cannabis-infused oil perfect for enhancing the effects of a relaxing massage.
Using cannabis in massage oil form also allows you to take advantage of these relaxing qualities without the psychoactive effects that THC can have when smoked or consumed, making it ideal for people who want the benefits without the high.
Why Should You Make Oil Instead of Buying It?
There are plenty of great oils on the market. However, there are lots of reasons that you might want to make it yourself instead of purchasing!
Save Money
One great reason to make your own massage oil? Saving money! Cannabis-infused massage oils can get super pricey, and when you make your own, you can save a lot of money, especially if you choose more budget-friendly ingredients.

Customization
When you make your own cannabis-infused massage oil, you can create it just the way that you like. Between the type of cannabis that you use, the carrier oil, the other ingredients, and the ratios, you can make the infused oil to your exact specifications.
Extra Special Gifting
Getting cannabis-infused massage oil as a gift is amazing, but getting some that’s homemade is extra special. If you make some yourself to give to someone, they’re sure to appreciate the time and effort you put into it. Plus, you can customize it for them to make it perfect.
It’s Fun!
Finally, making your own oil can be a super fun activity. Make it with friends for a cute get-together, or make it yourself for a fun craft on a night in.
What You Need
Ready to get started? Make sure that you have all the ingredients and tools that you need.
Ingredients
Finely ground cannabis bud (decarbed if you have it)
Carrier oil
Pick your favorite based on preference and budget. Olive oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil are solid options.
Essential oil and/or dried herbs and flowers
Add your favorite dried herbs or essential oils. Some popular options are peppermint oil or dried mint, lavender, calendula flowers, and whole cloves.
Tools
Saucepan and heatproof bowl, or slow cooker/Crockpot
You can use a saucepan and heatproof bowl for a makeshift double boiler if you don’t have a Crockpot
Cheesecloth
Funnel
Sterile bottle or mason jar
Instructions
First, you have to prepare your cannabis. If your cannabis is already decarbed, then it is ready to go. If not, then you can do so by heating your ground cannabis in the oven around 110 degrees Celsius/230 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 45 minutes.
To start by using a saucepan and heatproof bowl:
Fill your saucepan about a quarter of the way full. Bring it to a simmer.
Place the bowl on top (like a double boiler).
Add your oil to the bowl.
Add the cannabis and herbs, if using, and stir.
Cook for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Let the oil cool down.
Strain it into your mason jar with the cheesecloth and sieve.
Let the oil cool completely.
Add in your essential oil drops, if using any.
Feel free to use it immediately or wait 24 hours for maximum infusion.
If using a slow cooker or Crockpot:
Create a water bath by filling it with enough water to cover the mason jar that you are using. Set it to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
In your mason jar, combine the cannabis and any dry ingredients like dried herbs. Pour in the carrier oil.
Securely close the lid.
Allow the jar to sit in the water bath for four hours.
Remove the jar and allow it to cool.
Strain the oil through the cheesecloth.
Add in essential oil, if using.
Feel free to use it once it’s reached room temperature, or wait 24 hours for maximum infusion.
Final Touches
Don’t forget to label your jar or bottle. If you’re giving it as a gift, you can also make the presentation extra special with labels, ribbons, or stickers. Enjoy!
