The Truth About Cannabis For Election Stress Relief

For many folks across America, the day after election night means emotions are running high, and for good reason. In a nation divided nearly in half, millions feel anxious, edgy, and in need of an extra shot of caffeine or something stronger to calm their nerves. Many are on pins and needles due to the lingering uncertainty, shock, or disappointment. With tensions simmering, it’s no wonder so many people are searching for ways to deal with the stress.

With recent findings backing its effectiveness in reducing anxiety naturally, cannabis has become the answer for a multitude of people.

Today, we’ll dive into the science behind why cannabis — and specifically, a calming terpene called d-limonene — can help bring calm in the storm. So, whether you’re a veteran cannabis user or a total newbie to its potential, let’s explore why it’s good news that people are finding relief with this plant.

However, before we get into the details of cannabis-based limonene and how it relates to stress relief, let’s first explore the phenomenon known as Election Stress Disorder (ESD).

What is Election Stress Disorder?

ESD is a genuine experience impacting people everywhere. Even if you aren’t directly affected, chances are the people around you are. This type of stress isn’t just occasional worry about the outcome; instead, it’s a persistent, intense anxiety that affects mental, emotional, and even physical health that sometimes disrupts daily life.

ESD has been around for years but has intensified in recent times. According to the 2024 Stress in America Report by the American Psychological Association, the number of people feeling political stress has risen significantly, from 52% in 2016 to 69% today. The report also shows that 77% of Americans are anxious about the future of democracy, while 71% worry that election outcomes could incite violence. Despite this, one thing to keep in mind is that ESD doesn’t discriminate across political lines. Anyone can be affected.

Symptoms of ESD include difficulty sleeping, repetitive thoughts, irritability, strained relationships, social withdrawal, and even depression. Although Election Day is over, tensions are still running high and likely will continue to do so in the coming weeks as the dust settles.

As a result, many are turning to natural remedies to ease this stress, and cannabis has become a popular option, thanks to compounds within it that can help alleviate anxiety. One of the most promising of these compounds is limonene.

What is Limonene?

Limonene is a naturally occurring substance falling under the terpene umbrella. Terpenes are found not only in cannabis but also in everyday plants like lemons, oranges, and other citrus fruits. This particular terpene is responsible for the fresh, citrusy scent we associate with these fruits, and it helps enhance the flavor of cannabis strains rich in it. But limonene offers more than just an enticing aroma — it’s also shown potential for reducing anxiety. Let’s take a closer at what the new study found.

The Science Behind Using Limonene for Stress Relief

The latest research published in the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence led by scientists from Johns Hopkins University explored d-limonene’s ability to lessen THC-induced anxiety. The study involved 20 healthy adults, most of whom were around 26 years old. Participants attended up to 10 outpatient sessions where they were given one of four treatments: vaporized d-limonene by itself, vaporized THC alone, a combination of both THC and d-limonene, or distilled water as a placebo.

The study was double-blind, meaning neither the participants nor the researchers knew which treatment was given to avoid bias. Each participant completed nine sessions, while 12 took part in a final optional session using a higher d-limonene dose (15 mg) alongside THC to further examine the terpene’s effects. This higher dose was only introduced after verifying the safety of lower doses (1 mg and 5 mg).

During each session, researchers tracked participants’ self-reported experiences, including feelings of anxiety, mood, physical signs like heart rate and blood pressure, and cognitive performance, such as memory and reaction time. These measures were taken at the beginning and periodically over six hours. Additionally, blood and urine samples were collected to monitor levels of THC and d-limonene throughout.

The study found that when limonene was combined with THC, participants experienced noticeably reduced feelings of nervousness, paranoia, and anxiety — otherwise known as the dreaded side effects produced when THC levels are high. However, it was notable that limonene doesn’t interfere with THC’s actual desired effects, such as the sense of calm and relaxation from the high that many people seek.

How Cannabis and Limonene Interact in the Body

Cannabis and limonene complement each other by tapping into the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which influences mood, stress responses, and helps keep things harmonious in our bodies. The ECS operates through receptors called CB1 and CB2. When we consume cannabis, THC primarily binds to CB1 receptors, which are highly concentrated in the brain.

This interaction with CB1 receptors leads to the well-known effects of relaxation and euphoria, both of which have an uplifting effect. However, too much THC can sometimes overwhelm these receptors, leading to an unwanted greening-out situation for certain users.

This is where limonene comes into play. Although limonene doesn’t bind to CB1 or CB2 receptors like THC, it influences other systems involved in our mental health. For example, according to data published by the Journal of Functional Foods, limonene interacts with serotonin and dopamine pathways. Both of these neurotransmitters are associated with mood stability, stress management, and feelings of well-being. Thus, limonene can induce calm by increasing serotonin levels and modulating dopamine pathways.

Best Ways to Mitigate ESD With or Without Cannabis

Thankfully, there are a few different ways to deal with Election Stress Disorder (ESD). One of the simplest and most effective strategies is to step back from the sources that keep raising our stress levels.

In other words, unplug. And be intentional about it.

Taking a break from endless scrolling through news and social media can be immensely beneficial. You could, instead, try activities like going for a walk or working on a puzzle. However, if you prefer to stay informed, reading the news versus watching it can give you more control over the information you consume and avoid the overwhelming audio-visual effects.

Although sometimes, it’s best to take a complete break from the news to reset.

In addition, cutting down on news consumption can help minimize obsessive thoughts and improve sleep quality.

But take note, certain people or topics can also trigger ESD, particularly at upcoming family gatherings (looking at you, Thanksgiving). So, when a sensitive topic comes up, consider saying something like, “Let’s talk about something else for now. How about those [insert your local sports team here]?” Or politely excuse yourself with, “I need to grab some water,” then allow yourself to accidentally get sidetracked with another activity.

As an added bonus, if you decide to add cannabis to your ‘news cleanse’ routine, here are some strains that are bursting with limonene and should be on your radar the next time you head to the dispensary:

1. Wedding Cake

Wedding Cake is an Indica-heavy hybrid strain with high levels of limonene that lends it a sweet, earthy aroma with hints of vanilla. With its relaxing yet energizing properties, Wedding Cake is an ideal choice for easing stress since it helps balance users out without making them feel groggy.

2. Do-Si-Dos

Do-Si-Dos is another high-limonene strain that is highly regarded for its calming properties. With a sweet and slightly minty taste, this predominately Indica hybrid strain offers a deep sense of relaxation for the mind and body. It’s an excellent choice for managing anxiety after a high-stakes event or during times of increased stress.

3. Super Lemon Haze

For those looking for a more energizing option, Super Lemon Haze offers a citrusy aroma that invigorates the senses. The high concentration of limonene in Super Lemon Haze makes it a popular pick for daytime stress relief, as it helps promote a positive outlook and mental clarity. As a result, that makes it perfect for managing lingering election jitters while staying upbeat and focused.

Final Thoughts

In times like these, stress and anxiety can feel overwhelming, especially with emotions running high after such a divisive election. Thankfully, cannabis has natural ways to manage tension, and its calming compounds, such as limonene, provide a unique natural option. By helping to relieve stress without overwhelming the senses, cannabis can be a practical and effective choice when used mindfully.

Whether you choose to manage stress with cannabis, take a break from news and social media, or spend time with loved ones, remember there are many paths to finding peace. In the end, cannabis is just one of many tools we can use to steady ourselves through life’s most trying moments.
