How Cannabis Beauty Products Are Transforming a Billion-Dollar Industry

Cannabis and beauty are two of the fastest-growing industries in America.  Though they may not appear to have much in common, something exciting (and profitable) is happening at the point where they meet: cannabis beauty products are sweeping the industry.

In 2020, we reported on research around the burgeoning cannabis-beauty market conducted by Grandview Research Inc. Their report estimated that the CBD skincare market would be “… worth 1.7 billion by 2025.”  The category of cannabis-infused beauty products includes but is not limited to serums, cleansing bars, moisturizers, and even makeup.

While some of these products utilize THC, most cannabis-based beauty products on the market today use non-psychoactive and legal cannabinoids. This makes it easier for these products to reach customers all over the country and the world thanks to 2018’s Farm Bill which legalized products with hemp-derived compounds like CBD.

Infusing the Beauty Scene With the Benefits of CBD

A couple of years back, the only CBD salves and creams on the market were tailored to therapeutic uses rather than beauty or skin care. Since then, more brands have realized that cannabis also has its place within beauty products as it holds many therapeutic properties for skin, hair, and even nail health. CBD specifically offers antibacterial, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidizing, and oil-balancing effects.

Mandy Lile, a licensed aesthetician, and founder of Potency No. 710, was one of the first individuals to blend cannabis with skin care and beauty. Lile recounted the moment when the 2018 farm bill passed, allowing her to infuse CBD into her products for the first time:

“It was like magic. I had never seen a single ingredient offer almost instantaneous, effective results on so many levels. It was like it gave my Gold Serum superpowers!”

What the Future Holds for the Cannabis Beauty Industry

EINPress Wire reports that:

“According to a new report published by Allied Market Research titled, “CBD Skin Care Market by Product Type, and Distribution Channel: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2019–2026,” The global CBD skin care market size was valued at $633.6 million in 2018 and is anticipated to reach $3,484.00 million by 2026, with a CAGR of 24.80% during the forecast period. The global CBD oil segment was valued at $219.0 million in 2018 and is anticipated to reach $1,134.0 million by 2026, with a CAGR of 24.00% during the forecast period.”

To put that in perspective, in 2020, we reported that by 2025 the CBD beauty market would be worth 1.7 billion. These new projections estimate that by 2026, that number will be 3.4 billion, double what predictions said just three years ago.

Now that we have a better understanding of just how large the cannabis beauty industry is going to get — let’s take a look at the science behind this crazy rise.

What the Science Says Regarding Cannabis Beauty Products

As we stated above, there are many proven therapeutic benefits to the utilization of CBD for skincare, but what does the research say about cannabinoids, like CBD, CBG, and others, and their effectiveness within cannabis beauty products? Let’s take a look.

The Benefits of CBD in Beauty and Skincare Products

Research shows that CBD offers anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-aging properties. It has also been shown to help lock in moisture while regulating the hormones responsible for oil production in the body. This helps reduce excess sebum production, which is an underlying cause of acne and many other skin conditions.

The Benefits of CBG in Beauty and Skincare Products

Like CBD, a lesser-known phytocannabinoid known as cannabigerol or simply CBG also has the potential to treat various skin conditions. Specifically, CBG offers antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-blemish properties. It has also been found to help soothe the skin when applied topically and to boost the efficiency of the skin’s protective barrier.

The Benefits of THC in Beauty and Skincare Products

While THC is known for being the psychoactive compound that produces the intoxicating effects of cannabis, this compound, when utilized topically, does not result in the same effects. When applied topically or utilized transdermally, THC offers relief from pain and itching associated with skin disorders. It has also been found to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, analgesic, and anti-proliferative properties — all of which are crucial for improved skin health.

There is a Cannabis cultivar named Canna Country, number 26 that is dominant in ocimene, often at over one percent.
Currently, it’s only available in California
