5 Rare Cannabis Strains You Should Try if You Get the Chance

These days cannabis consumers have a lot of variety when choosing what cannabis strain they want to purchase. There are rare cannabis strains and more common cannabis strains, like with any other product. There is a plethora of Indica, Sativa, and hybrid cannabis strains available on both the recreational and medical cannabis markets. As research develops, we are beginning to understand that these classifications are of lesser importance than the terpene and cannabinoid composition of different strains or chemovars. The fact remains that the varieties to choose from are seemingly endless.

There are some standard and readily available favorites regarding cannabis strains. Girl Scout Cookies, GG4, OG Kush, Sour Diesel, Afghani, Hindu Kush, and Haze are just a few staple classics. These are strains that, when appropriately flowered, maintain impeccable quality characteristics of flavor and potency. With people having such a wide variety of cannabis to choose from, from time to time, you will run across some hard-to-find, rare cannabis strains.

Rare Cannabis Strains to Keep an Eye Out For

When you happen to run across a cannabis strain you have never seen before or tried before, you might want to give it a try. It would suck to let the opportunity to try a rare cannabis strain pass you by.

Rare cannabis strains aren’t regularly found at your local dispensary. Rare cannabis strains are difficult to find for a reason. Usually, it has to do with issues like accessibility to authentic genetics and long grow times.

If you happen to see one of these five cannabis strains in your local dispensary, make sure you give them a try. Here are some of the rarest cannabis strains on the planet.

Rare Cannabis Strain #1: Malawi Gold

This landrace cannabis strain is from the Malawi region of Africa. It is considered a pure Sativa cannabis strain that produces consistent results thanks to a lack of other genetic influences from cannabis plants in the area. This rare variety of cannabis is almost mythical.

It is said to produce an average THC level of around 18%, with a dominant terpene being myrcene. Myrcene is found in cannabis and mangoes, and is believed to help increase the longevity and intensity of the effects of cannabis.

Malawi Gold produces a relaxing, energetic feeling that helps promote inspiration and creativity while assisting consumers in combating the symptoms of stress, pain, nausea, loss of appetite, migraine headaches, and more. The buds from this rare variety of cannabis are bright green to lime green in color, with an abundance of fiery orange and red hairs hiding behind a thick sticky, chunky wall of resin-filled trichomes. The flavor profile is tropical and sweet, with an earthy, pungent finish. If you can try this one, don’t let it pass you by.

Oaxacan Highland

With an elevation of around 5100 ft, temperatures of about 75° F, and an average of 50% humidity, the city of Oaxaca, located in Mexico, is home to a legendary landrace strain of cannabis called Oaxacan Gold. This pure Sativa variety of cannabis produces an average THC level between 12 and 20%.

The buds of this rare cannabis strain are neon green, with electrified orange hairs peeking from behind a thick wall of sticky, resinous trichomes. The flavor profile is peppery and spicy with hints of citrus and an earthy, pungent finish. Many medical cannabis patients report this strain of cannabis helping them fight the symptoms of headaches, fatigue, stress, depression and more.

Road Kill Skunk

This scarce and hard-to-find variety of cannabis is an Indica-dominant hybrid. It supposedly contains the lineage of Afghani.

Roadkill Skunk was extremely popular in the late 80s and early 90s. Due to its highly potent aroma, the strain became unpopular because it would quickly signal authorities if you had some of it on you. Roadkill Skunk smells exactly like its name suggests.

If you’ve ever driven past a dead skunk in the road and smelt that skunky funk, this is what a bag of Roadkill Skunk smells like. So, it’s definitely an acquired taste. THC levels average between 15 to 22%, and the buds are bright green to white with an insanely thick resinous wall of trichomes covering them, which give the buds a whitish appearance.

Roadkill Skunk is said to be an excellent strain to help control the symptoms of chronic pain, neuropathy, nausea, loss of appetite, stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia and more. Don’t be fooled by the Roadkill Skunk seeds and products you may find on today’s market, as in most cases, they are fragile versions of the original and lack that funk that you should have with a genuine Roadkill Skunk.

Puna Budder

This rare cannabis strain is a 50/50 hybrid offering consumers a beautiful balance of Indica and Sativa. It is said to be a cross of Afghani and Hawaiian landrace strains. THC levels average somewhere between 18 to 24% or higher.

The buds are forest green, with rustic-colored hairs hiding behind an exuberantly sticky wall of trichomes that will gum up any grinder. The flavor profile is earthy and sweet, with hints of blueberry, grapes, pine, and skunk, followed by a pleasing pungent floral finish. Consumers report this strain helping them control the symptoms of fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, stress, chronic pain, depression, insomnia and more.

79 Christmas Tree Bud

This particular variety of cannabis is an old-school classic that has become a rarity. With hundreds of cannabis strains available on the legal market, one that you rarely see in dispensaries is Christmas Tree Bud.

Christmas Tree Bud is named accordingly because it has an intense pine flavor. If you could put the taste of Christmas into cannabis, this is it. This Indica dominant variety of cannabis produces an average THC level of 18 to 24% or higher. The buds are bright green with exceptionally generous coverage of sticky resin-filled trichomes.

The flavor profile is earthy sweet, and pine-like with an intense, spicy finish. Many people report this variety of cannabis helping them control nausea, loss of appetite, chronic pain, arthritis, stress, depression, anxiety and more.

Is there a place online that can point us in the right direction locating some of these? Or where to get quality seeds/cuttings? I live in NJ and all the dispensaries sell is large corp grows. Not always impressed with the quality-always feels a little mass produced—because it is.

Well if you can get to NY there are plenty of spots there where you can get quality flowers. Go on YouTube and check out Marijuana mania episode 9- nyc, Berner just posted some places he went to while he was there.

I also haven’t seen the old standards & I do understand some of those classics are obviously one of the four grandparents of “a bunch” of all of these 3000 new strains, developed to take their place due to better genetics, terpenes, & well, I can’t help but recall there used to be a lot more imperialism or uhm, “the spreading of democracy to other countries who have great natural or expensive resources but don’t understand the basic principles of capitalism as defined by the US. In other words, we don’t have nearly the same amount of ridiculous numbers of US Armed Forces personnel in Countries like Germany & Amsterdam, since the Cold War was declared dead during the Reagan (Ray-Gun) years. Now don’t think about this one too much but when Nancy was “just saying No”; even though you’ve got me by 10 years; I’m going to assume you will like the response we had… We’d say, “No, don’t mind if we do!” So we did & here’s the scary part I didn’t want anybody to dwell on; however, G Bush Sr was head of the CIA during some of the Nixon Years, when the unconstitutional prohibition on all drugs were made to have worse consequences than if you had actually injured someone on purpose. In 1970, the only President who had to step down before he was impeached and tossed out on the East Lawn…Tricky Dicky Nixon passed all of the AntiDrug Laws which Henry Enslinger had wasted his entire life making sure that the only education people in our country got about drugs was they’re really bad for you and the socio-economic system behind the majority of those who smoked pot or tried any illicit drugs were 99% never going to vote for Nixon or anyone like him. So G Bush goes from CIA & importing drugs under the radar to VP for 8 yrs + 4 more years when he actually had the title President. (In other words, I’m suggesting Reagan’s brain dementia was clearly in full swing before they got rid of that silly peanut farmer who couldn’t get the hostage situation resolved after 18 months but the Republicans had them back within about a month after taking office. (Think exactly the opposite of how the Covid-19 pandemic shots suddenly arrived 30 days after Uncle Joe took office, kind of very similar.) Anyway I think we all know George Jr wasn’t exactly brain trust material but he also wouldn’t be the real president between Dick Chaney & Bush Sr both getting copies of every single report a few hrs prior to Jr seeing them; which worked great for feeding Jr a plan for the day cause he certainly wasn’t going to be coming up with any thing helpful to the citizens of the US. (Not that Bush Sr & Dick C (damn they sound like bad porn names) were inspired to help any of the citizens either. Regardless, it’s easier to keep children safe from dugs by making them illegal so the cartels can decide how to make them, where to send them, how much to charge & my favorite making sure that Heroin, CarFentanyl, Coke, psychedelics & pot are all readily available, packaged, quality controlled, distributed & still cheaper than the legal market. Hmmm, I wonder why Nixon, Bush (Reagan), Clinton’s & I’m so disappointed in Obama for just blindly following their lead & instead of repealing the drug prohibition in 12 yrs or less, like the way Alcohol got treated and made in bathtubs and sold even if it made the customers blind! Wtf, would anyone want to have criminals in charge of every aspect of the drug trade; which is actually the only true capitalistic niche in the US or World markets; No government invisible hand to add tariffs and taxes and tell anyone how to do anything…. I can’t believe the Boomers couldn’t get THC legalized but they sure all got cheap & better educations, careers, homes, Planet wasn’t totally dying yet, and they get to be the first generation to not have their children live better lives… You know how all the robots were going to allow us to only have 1 person per household work 20 hr work weeks & vacation & discretionary income was going to be the future generations Mantra…..lol! As if, first we had to finish where they barely got stared & now we are working diligently so Grandma & Grandpa can go on another 3 month vacation. Retirement at 59 1/2 and actually getting what you paid into the system, what a crazy Ponzi scheme, Soc Sec! Anyway, i miss the Columbian & Acupulcan Gold – Panama & China Red, and I haven’t seen any Choc or otherwise Thai Sticks since ‘88.? As far as the hash goes, it did disappear for a few years & then we invaded Afghanistan & suddenly within 10-15 yrs we’ve got a huge opioid crisis and Hash was gold sealed/stamped & only $1000/lb in ‘88-‘90. I’m mostly only having the concentrates and the 50 catchy names they’ve got now… still hash to me! ✌🏻 I’m not positive I answered your questions; but after 3 big draws on some Louis the XIII (the Sun King) Cartridge stating 92% THC & I’m not positive it is actually that strong as it is kind of feeling like only 91.5% 🙄 (eye roll). Anyway, search Leafly for strains & see if they’ve got anything close at any dispensaries near you or possibly a vacation spot? Good Luck, & remember only dopes use dope! 🫵🏻🫣
