Terpene Spotlight: Discovering the Benefits of Ocimene

While THC often takes the spotlight, terpenes—like Ocimene—contribute to the unique flavor, aromas, and effects of the different cannabis strains. The herbaceous, sweet scent and the uplifting effect you experience with your favorite cannabis strain could mean your buds has some level of Ocimene.

This article helps you understand Ocimene’s role in the cannabis plant, including its potential health benefits and some popular cannabis strains you can find it.

What Is Ocimene?

Unlike predominant terpenes, like Humulene, Myrcene, and Limonene, Ocimene is a less-occurring terpene found in some cannabis strains. The compound contributes to the characteristic sweet, herbal, or woody aroma of certain strains like Space Queen and Clementine.

In addition to its contribution to cannabis fragrance, studies suggest Ocimene may have antimicrobial and insecticidal properties, which protect cannabis plants from destructive pests and pathogens.

The terpene has also been linked to a list of medical and therapeutic benefits you experience after using certain cannabis strains, including mood-lift. However, research is still underway to ascertain Ocimene’s properties and workings.

Ocimene originates from Ocimum, a Greek word meaning basil. But the terpene releases an aroma and flavor different from the basil herb.

Ocimene tastes less complex than it smells. Characterized by its fruity notes that taste like pineapple and citrus, hints of this terpene can be experienced in lavender, mango, mint, and kumquat.

Potential Health Benefits of Ocimene

Being a relatively minor compound—compared to compounds like THC, CBD, and terpenes such as myrcene and Limonene—cannabis-based Ocimene terpene has attracted but a handful of studies. However, studies on other plants give hints about Ocimene’s potential effects.

One of these studies shows that Ocimene may offer antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. The research examined Ocimene terpene extracted from Satsuma Mandarin (Citrus Unshiu), the easy-peel, semi-seedless fruit popularly called Tangerine.

The researchers found that Ocimene constitutes 5.6 percent of all chemicals obtained from the Citrus oil extract—the highest Ocimene concentration ever discovered in any plant.

Substantial evidence from the research also showed that ocimene-rich oils could suppress inflammatory substances released by the immune system.

Investigating the chemical profile of Ocimene, researchers say citrus oil rich with this terpene may be an organic alternative for Antihistamine drugs, a common treatment for influenza, cold, and several other allergies.

Further findings suggest that terpene may manage diabetic symptoms by preventing the increase of causative enzymes.

A 2013 research investigated Ocimene in black pepper seed, found anti-oxidative properties in the terpene, and suggested the compound may inhibit certain enzymes commonly associated with hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

Popular Cannabis Strains With Ocimene

Ocimene can be found in a few cannabis strains. Although it usually occurs in low concentration, the levels vary across strains. Here are common marijuana strains with considerable levels of Ocimene:

Clementine

Clementine is a citrusy sativa-leaning strain with a tangy, sweet aroma, like fresh oranges. Its terpene profile includes Ocimene, which partly accounts for its uplifting and energetic effects.

Clementine’s tangy, sweet essence awakens your senses and fills your day with a burst of positivity.

Space Queen

This strain offers a perfect balance, combining both indica and sativa effects in equal measure (50/50). With its delightful blend of earthiness and sweet citrus flavors, this Space Queen pleases your taste buds.

Boasting an average THC level of 15%, this bud caters to both newbies and experienced tokers. Its alluring scent resembles pineapple, likely due to its ocimene content.

Dutch Treat

This strain is predominantly indica (80% indica, 20% Sativa), birthed by a cross between Northern Lights and Haze, two favorites among connoisseurs.

Ocimene in Dutch Treat’s terpene profile accounts for its sweet, fruity, and woody smell and flavor. However, caution is advised for newcomers, as Dutch Treat can offer anything from a moderate high (with THC potency of 18%) to a knockout (with up to 25% THC concentration).

Go slow on your first experience and savor the Dutch Treat experience.

Strawberry Cough

Like Dutch Treat, Strawberry Cough owes its lineage to Haze, contributing to its sativa-dominant nature. However, its delightful flavors and aromas are a result of its other parent strain, Strawberry Fields.

Its Ocimine terpene gives the strain a combination of earthiness, fruitiness, and sweetness.

Boasting relatively high THC levels, ranging from 22% to 26%, exercise caution to avoid having too much. Learn to resist its alluring flavors.

Note that terpene profiles vary even within the same strain, depending on factors such as cultivation techniques, environmental conditions, and genetic variations. Therefore, while these strains are generally associated with Ocimene, the exact composition may differ.

Explore Ocimene and All Its Offerings

Ocimene is an understudied component that gives your favorite strain its unique smell, taste, and effects.

The terpene brings its distinct charm to the world of cannabis. Whether you appreciate the delightful taste, alluring aroma, and relieving effects or enjoy the synergistic effects with other compounds within the plant, Ocimene adds an intriguing touch to your cannabis experience.

As the understanding of cannabis terpenes continues to evolve, we look forward to uncovering more about Ocimene’s potential and how it enhances our experience with our favorite herb, cannabis.
